How to configure your free Let's Encrypt SSL certificate

Make sure that you are logged in to DirectAdmin before you proceed.

  1. Go to "Domain Setup".
  2. Select the domain where you want to add SSL encryption.
  3. Enable "Secure SSL".
  4. Click on "Save".
  5. Go to "Home" and click on "SSL Certificates".
  6. Select the radio button in front of the three radio buttons where "Free & automatic certificate from Let's Encrypt is one of them.
  7. Select the radio button "Free & automatic certificate from Let's Encrypt
  8. Fill in the required information. Make sure that Key Size is set to 4096 and the certificate type to SHA256 in order to have maximum security.
  9. Select the domains where you want to enable Let's Encrypt for.
  10. Click on "Save".
DirectAdmin takes care of requesting, validating and installing the certificate. A Let's Encrypt certificate is only valid for 90 days, but DirectAdmin will renew this automatically for you.

Why can you not activate this for all my domains automatically?

As a security precaution Let's encrypt has limited the number of requests we can send per 3 hours. Unfortunately, we can only SSL certificates for 10 domains per 3 hours. If you get an error message that we have reached this limit, we advise you to try it later again. We can not control the limit that is maintained by Let's encrypt.

Can I still use paid certificates?

It is still possible to use paid certificates, although they may not always be necessary.
