A Brief Look into cPanel and Its Features

What is cPanel?

cPanel is a powerful, user-friendly web hosting control panel that runs the back end of your website. It provides a suite of tools and scripts to help you manage your hosting account efficiently, including website files, email accounts, databases, and server settings.

How to Login to cPanel

You can access your cPanel in several ways:

  • Visit yourdomain.com/cPanel in your browser.
  • Alternatively, use your server's IP address followed by /cPanel.

Once you navigate to the login page, enter the username and password provided in your welcome email. This will grant you access to the cPanel dashboard.

The cPanel Dashboard

The first time you log into cPanel, you might find the numerous options overwhelming. However, everything is neatly categorized into boxes for easy navigation. At the top of the screen, you'll find important notices, and all tools are grouped into categories such as Files, Email, Databases, and Security.

Key Navigation Buttons:

  • Home: Takes you back to the main cPanel screen.
  • File Manager: Allows you to manage your website files.
  • Update Contact Info: Lets you update your contact email address for account notifications.
  • Log Out: Safely logs you out of your cPanel account.

Account Information

On the left-hand side of your cPanel, you’ll see a box titled Account Information, which provides key details about your hosting account:

  • Sub Domains: Number of subdomains you’ve created.
  • MySQL Databases: Number of active databases in use.
  • Disk Usage: Amount of storage space currently being used.
  • Bandwidth Usage This Month: Amount of bandwidth consumed during the current billing cycle.
  • Email Accounts: Number of email accounts you’ve set up.
  • FTP Accounts: Number of FTP accounts for file uploads and downloads.

Server Information

Beneath the Account Information box, you’ll find the Server Information section, which contains technical details about the server hosting your account:

  • cPanel Version: The version of cPanel installed on your server.
  • Operating System: The server's operating system (e.g., Linux).
  • Apache Version: The version of Apache web server running on your server.
  • PHP Version: The version of PHP installed on your server.
  • MySQL Version: The version of MySQL database software running on your server.

Server Status

By clicking on Server Status in the cPanel dashboard, you can view detailed information about the current status of your server. This includes what services are running, their uptime, and any issues that may need attention.

cPanel includes several tools and features to streamline website management:

  • File Management: Use File Manager to upload, edit, and organize your website files directly.
  • Database Management: Create and manage databases using MySQL and phpMyAdmin.
  • Email Management: Set up custom email accounts, spam filters, and mailing lists.
  • Website Security: Install SSL certificates, set up hotlink protection, and block IP addresses.
  • Softaculous App Installer: Install popular applications like WordPress, Joomla, and Magento with a single click.
